On a multi drop round, the difference between a good week and a great one often comes down to small habits. None of these tips involve driving faster — in fact, safe and steady driving is part of earning more. Here are five things our most experienced drivers do every day.
1. Load your van in route order
This is the number one tip from every experienced driver. Spend ten extra minutes at the depot loading parcels in the order you will deliver them, and you can save far more than that over the day. Group large items together, keep the next few stops within reach and use shelving or crates if you have them.
2. Park smart, walk smart
Every time you start and stop the van you lose time and fuel. Look for parking spots that let you reach several addresses on foot. On terraced streets, park in the middle and work outwards in both directions. Always park legally and safely — a parking ticket wipes out a morning’s profit.

3. Get deliveries right first time
A failed delivery is a parcel you have to carry around all day and possibly bring back tomorrow. Read the delivery notes, check safe-place instructions and use the customer’s preferred option. Accurate scans and clear photos also protect you if a delivery is ever questioned.
4. Look after your van and your fuel bill
- Check tyre pressures every week — under-inflated tyres increase fuel use.
- Remove unnecessary weight from the van.
- Drive smoothly: gentle acceleration and braking can make a noticeable difference to fuel costs.
- Keep up with servicing so small problems do not become expensive breakdowns.
5. Keep your records and claim every expense
If you are self employed, every allowable expense you claim reduces the tax you pay. Keep receipts for fuel, servicing, insurance, phone costs and work clothing. Simple apps make it easy to photograph receipts as you go. Read our guide to self employed vs employed work for more on how expenses work.
Bonus tip: look after yourself
A long day on the road is physical. Take your breaks, drink plenty of water, lift with your legs and wear good footwear. Drivers who look after themselves stay consistent — and consistency is what earns you the best rounds.
